Midnight Madness

The days are dark and short around here lately and that gloomy feeling of being trapped in the house has started to set in and make me feel irritable. We needed something to stir us up and get us moving so about 8 Pm one night last week I started planning a family "outing" you might say. I posted it as an event on Facebook just to be funny. What I was planning was a midnight snowball fight. There was no school the next day and there was at least six inches on the ground, so why not?
It occurred to me at about 11 Pm that we were going to need to hunt down some gloves and hats. This was the first snow of the season and we hadn't had a need for either up to this point. I found several pairs of gloves, problem being none of them matched. Oh well, they would do. It wasn't like we were having a fashion show.
We tried to wait til midnight but anticipation was high and we found ourselves outside at 11:30 bundled up tight in our mismatched gloves, woolen hats and heavy coats and boots. At first I tried to keep everybody kind of quiet, for fear that someone might call the police if we got too loud, but pretty soon I forgot. The snow was like powdery ice and couldn't be formed so it was more like a powder fight than a snowball fight. We ran around like crazy people throwing snow at each other in the moonlight, rubbing it in each other's faces, catching each other on the back of the head. The girls made a game of seeing who could snatch my favorite pink hat off my head and holding it hostage. Finally the girls threw themselves down in the snow in the front yard and made snow angels next to each other while I snapped pictures of them. We ran around for a few more minutes, the girls and I, Dad having gone in long ago and Matt at a friends house, and finally came in, wet, winded, chilled to the bone and completely exhilarated. I finally got my hat back and maybe a little of my dignity at losing the snowball fight to my girls. They got me good but that's ok, I'll get 'em next time.
