SAM! Why'd you do that??!!

What am going to do with that dog? He's normally pretty good especially since he has never really been owned by anybody and I have never had a dog. But tonight he scared the daylights out of me. My son, Matt, and a friend were hanging around downstairs when one of those kitchen magnets fell off the fridge. You know one of those plastic alphabet letters that you teach your kids to read with. Well Sam grabbed it and started chewing it. Matt reached out to get it, and before he could retrieve it Sam swallowed it whole! I immediately started freaking out because(of course) the vet had just closed. I called them anyway and they suggested I take him to the nearest animal hospital thirty minutes away. Anybody who has read previous blogs will know that Sam does not travel well. Nevertheless I bundled him in the car and we took off. We got down the street and I called to let them know we were coming. My heart was racing. Besides the fact that I was really worried, there was the panicky thought of "How would I pay for an operation?" This could cost thousands. Well the on call vet told me to wait twelve hours to see if he has any symptoms of distress. He may just "pass" it. We will just have to wait and see. But you can bet if he shows any distress I will be on the road in no time, no matter how much it costs or how much he ralffs on the way. I sure hope we don't end up at the vet's office. It wasn't a big letter, maybe an inch by and two inches. It should ahem, *coughs delicately* "pass", but you know it's goint to H-U-R-T. If he manages to come through ok and doesn't have to have an operation, I think I'm going to make up a parody to "There was an old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly"...It's going to go like this. There was a brown doggy who swallowed an A...I don't know why he swallowed an A...He just won't say. If he doesn't get through this ok, I'm going to feel bad that I joked about it. I'm hoping for the best. More tomorrow.

Postscript. It's tomorrow. I made him comfortable on his bed in the kitchen and went to bed. I got up every three hours to check on him and he never showed any signs of discomfort at all. When I got up this morning he met me at the door wagging his tail, or should I say his tail was wagging his body, he was so excited to see me. I fed him, he ate and went outside and that's that. He seems fine, so far.

Sunday night. Still acts just fine, in fact friskier than ever.
